First Paper: Arguing from Evidence (Sept. 29)
NOTE: Slightly revised on Sept. 24 to improve the clarity of the assignment
TOPIC: Why did the Popular Unity fall?/Why did the government of Isabel Martínez de Perón fall?
Paper due: At beginning of class on Tuesday, September 29.
Main PURPOSE of paper: To help you argue from evidence
Below you will find two sets of propositions (one drawn from Chile and the other from Argentina). You are to pick EITHER one or the other (either CHILE or ARGENTINA) and provide evidence for both of the terms of the proposition. In the final 2-3 paragraphs (or points of an outline), you should come to a conclusion in which you argue why the evidence is stronger for either one or the other of the two sides. If you think that the two sides are equally strong, you can state that. Indicate where the evidence you are using is coming from (both the secondary sources you are using and the references they are drawing from).
Chile:
(1) The Popular Unity Government of Salvador Allende fell because of its own incompetence;
(2) The Popular United Government fell because it was pushed by a concerted opposition and U.S. support.
Argentina:
(1) The Peronist (civilian) government fell in 1976 because militant groups on the left created a condition of intolerable chaos in the country and the military had broad support to step in;
(2). The Peronist government fell in 1976 because the anti-communist civilian and military forces were looking for an excuse to step in after they had already decimated the militant left.
Pick a country, provide evidence for both of sides of the argument (for example, both that Allende fell because of his own incompetence and that Allende was pushed), and conclude as to which side (in your reading) has the preponderance of evidence or if the case is equal for both. Remember that there will be no case where ALL the evidence is just on one side.
In this paper, I am more interested in the evidence you muster and evaluate more than the narrative qualities of the paper itself so you have two options. You can write a traditional paper (introductory paragraphs, topical sentences, development of an argument over the course of the paper, paragraphs logically linked, etc.), or something like an extended outline. For the latter your paper would look more like this:
Chile.
I. The Popular Unity Government…fell because of its own incompetence
A. Argument 1 (written out including where the evidence comes from)
B. Argument 2 (same)
C. Argument 3 (same)
II. The Popular Unity Government…was pushed A. Argument 1 …etc.
III. Conclusions
Write out your conclusions
Evaluation: I will evaluate your papers on the basis of the evidence you provide, whether it supports the argument (each of two arguments), and the way that your conclusion ties into the evidence you provide. You'll also be evaluated on basic writing (grammar, spelling, etc.) and following the terms of the assignment.
Length: your paper/extended outline will be 3-5 pages.
Citations: use the proper citation format located as given here.
You must “sign” (i.e. type, since you will be turning in a PDF) an honor code.
Formatting: Please turn in your paper in PDF format via Blackboard.
To turn in via Blackboard: Go to “Assignments” in the top “Content Area” of Blackboard; Click on “Assignments,” click on “1st Paper: Arguing from Evidence” – and you’ll upload your paper from there. Make sure that your paper, in fact, has been uploaded.
